An ancient temple immerse in the flow of history 

Mau Xuong Pagoda, also known as Bai Da Pagoda, located in Quang Binh commune, Thanh Hoa province (formerly Quang Luu commune, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa), is one of the most sacred and grand ancient temples in Thanh Hoa province. Established during the Tran Dynasty, nearly 600 years ago, the pagoda is not only a resilient historical witness through countless natural disasters and invasions, but also a solid spiritual anchor for the local people and visitors from near and far.

Having a massive planned area of 12,500 m², situated in auspicious "Dragon Head" land, Mau Xuong Pagoda is surrounded by lush, quiet and solemn scenery. With its immense historical and architectural value, on January 25, 1998, Mau Xuong Pagoda was officially classified as a Provincial-level Historical and Cultural Relic, becoming a highlight on the cultural and spiritual tourism map of Quang Binh commune today.

Having undergone major restoration phases from 2013 to 2020, the ancient pagoda now boasts an imposing Main Sanctuary of ironwood and a spacious reception. Despite that, Mau Xuong Pagoda still preserves its time-less traditional beauty, becoming a key in Thanh Hoa province's tourism development strategy.

Spiritual depth from age-old stories

What makes Mau Xuong Pagoda so special compared to other pagodas is the unique story behind its name and the one-of-a-kind religious beliefs it embodies. Few people know that, to arrive at its current simple name, Mau Xuong pagoda has undergone many name changes, linked to the flow of national history. In its early days during the Tran Dynasty, the pagoda was called Tuyet Phong. During the Le Dynasty, it was bestowed with an ethereal name, Tuyet Son Phong Tu. Later, it was changed again to Yen Dong Pagoda, after the village name, and it wasn't until the 11th year of Minh Mang's reign (1830), when Yen Dong village changed its name to Mau Xuong village, that the pagoda adopted this name, which it retains to this day.

Besides its rich history, Mau Xuong Pagoda is also notable for its religious characteristics deeply rooted in Thanh Hoa’s culture. Entering the main hall, visitors will witness a unique fusion of religious beliefs characteristic of Thanh Hoa, a layout where the front chambers are dedicated to Buddha and the rear sanctuaries to Saints. Therefore, this place not only worships the Buddha but also the local Holy Sages of "Noi Dao"– a sacred indigenous religion embodying the "Three Religions in Harmony" philosophy. The harmonious combination of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, along with the veneration of saintly figures who contributed to the nation and its people (such as Lord Nguyen Minh Khong), demonstrates the spiritual culture and profound religious harmony of our ancestors.
